Google Workspace for Education Storage Limits

Effective January 2023, Google has implemented a paid Google Workspace subscription package for universities and will no longer be free, unlimited storage.

This storage space covers both Google Drive and Google Photos.

We are asking users to perform housekeeping on files and photos in their Google storage to decrease the overall storage limit.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your current Google storage status.
  2. Manage your Google Drive files.
    1. Remove any unwanted files.
    2. Review and delete large or unnecessary files in the Drive.
    3. Review and delete large or unnecessary files in shared drives.
    4. Move files to your local hard drive, a portable hard drive, or your 1 Terabyte (1T) OneDrive.
    5. Delete files shared in multiple locations.  If a file resides in two locations, it may be consuming twice the storage space.
  3. Organize your Google Photos
    1. Backup your photos to your local hard drive, a portable hard drive, or your 1 Terabyte (1T) OneDrive
    2. Turn off Backup and sync Google Photos linked to your @eku.edu account.
    3. Delete files shared in multiple locations. If a file resides in two locations, it may be consuming twice the storage space.

Tips

  • In case a file is accidentally deleted, you can recover it.
  • Transfer your Google Drive files and Google Photos to a different Google Account.  You can use the Google Takeout Tool to migrate your data off your account to another account.  Be sure you're logged into the correct account when you go to this address.
