Tips for Learning Remotely

  1. Know your learning style.  The best way to learn online may include you being alone which might also make you more productive.  What worked on-campus may not work back home.
    1. Silence/mute other computer/phone apps while in a class.
    2. Have a dedicated space, especially if you don't have access to a residence hall room or university library. Learning in a consistent spot can help you stay focused.
    3. Do online meetings and presentations have a location (e.g., at a desk or on a sofa) or a dress code (e.g., professional-looking attire)?
  2. Interact with others face-to-face.  Even if it's video conferencing, it helps you feel connected.
  3. When taking an online class, disable other activities on the internet that could disrupt your bandwidth.
  4. Take breaks. It is important to get up and walk around every 30 minutes to move your body and clear your mind.  Go get a glass of water!
  5. When you are finished studying, move out of that spot so you can get back to your personal life.
  6. Remember security even when home!  Protect your devices and accounts.
  7. Online classrooms:
    1. Take paper and pen notes, especially if it is an online meeting or lecture.
    2. On chats and discussion boards, build on others' comments and questions.
  8. Be sure any new or changed assignment due dates are on your calendar with reminders at least a week out so you can remember.
  9. Form an online study group.  You can do this with Google Meet or Zoom.
  10. Make sure your work is your own.  Continue to respect your Student Code of Conduct regarding academic dishonesty when looking for help on or completing assignments, papers, and tests.
