Tips for Learning Remotely
- Know your learning style. The best way to learn online may include you being alone which might also make you more productive. What worked on-campus may not work back home.
- Silence/mute other computer/phone apps while in a class.
- Have a dedicated space, especially if you don't have access to a residence hall room or university library. Learning in a consistent spot can help you stay focused.
- Do online meetings and presentations have a location (e.g., at a desk or on a sofa) or a dress code (e.g., professional-looking attire)?
- Interact with others face-to-face. Even if it's video conferencing, it helps you feel connected.
- When taking an online class, disable other activities on the internet that could disrupt your bandwidth.
- Take breaks. It is important to get up and walk around every 30 minutes to move your body and clear your mind. Go get a glass of water!
- When you are finished studying, move out of that spot so you can get back to your personal life.
- Remember security even when home! Protect your devices and accounts.
- Online classrooms:
- Take paper and pen notes, especially if it is an online meeting or lecture.
- On chats and discussion boards, build on others' comments and questions.
- Be sure any new or changed assignment due dates are on your calendar with reminders at least a week out so you can remember.
- Form an online study group. You can do this with Google Meet or Zoom.
- Make sure your work is your own. Continue to respect your Student Code of Conduct regarding academic dishonesty when looking for help on or completing assignments, papers, and tests.
