Scheduled Outages

Wednesday, October 4 - Friday, October 6, 2017

College Cable will be upgrading equipment on EKU's campus that will cause brief outages for each television channel. The outage may last up to 20 minutes for each channel.

This will impact all campus users including residence halls and any faculty/staff who have cable boxes from IT.

Work Start: Wednesday Oct 4th
Work End:   Friday Oct 6th

All work each of the three days will occur between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.  IT will be taking down 8 channels, replacing equipment for those 8 channels, bringing those channels back online, and then taking down another set of 8 channels, replacing that equipment, bringing them back online and so on, until we are finished replacing equipment for each channel on the lineup.

• Students will NOT need to do anything, the channels will disappear and reappear within 30 mins.
• Student’s should NOT perform a channel scan while the 8 channels are down

Starting at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct 3rd, IT/Windstream will be moving on of our Internet connections to new equipment. If testing goes well, IT/Windstream will leave it on the new equipment but if there are issues we will move it back. Based on typical usage, we believe there is enough spare bandwidth to cover the outage, but prefer to let everyone know in case we don’t.

Outage Window Begin: 12:01 AM on Wednesday, Oct 3rd
Outage Window End: 6:00 AM on Wednesday, Oct 3rd

What will users see during the outage?
• Slow internet speeds
• Internet interruptions
• Some websites may not load
• All Internet2 services will continue to work normally (e.g., Netflix, Microsoft services)

IT, in conjunction with Commonwealth Technology, will be making some security changes for printers that have the “Scan to Email” feature.  This change will affect all Kyocera copiers on campus.

Although no disruptions of scanning to email are expected, please note the email generated from the printers could have a different FROM address or SUBJECT line after the changes.  Keep this in mind if you have any Outlook email rules configured to filter email.

The tentative schedule of changes is as follows:

Week of August 14-17, 2017

Blackboard will be down after 1 p.m. on Monday, August 14, for a system upgrade that will take several days. We must install this upgrade to maintain support from Blackboard and to be sure that the inline grading feature continues to operate. (The vendor for the inline grading feature, Box, Inc., is switching its software in October, and we must have an upgraded Blackboard system to match that change.) We will restore all Blackboard services as soon as possible; users should plan to have access by Friday. News about our progress will be posted at

Perkins Datacenter Power Outage

  • Begin Date/Time: August 5, 2017 – 8:00 AM
  • End Date/Time: August,5 2017 – 11:00 AM

Outage not expected, but there is a slit risk.  It is expected that everything will remain online. IT services will be running on emergency (UPS) power for a short period of time while the change is made between 9:00 AM - 9:15 AM.

Perkins Datacenter Power Outage - CANCELED - Will be rescheduled for a later date

The Datacenter located in the Perkins Building must be completely powered down to allow for a generator upgrade.

Tentative Outage Details:
- Begin Date/Time: July 29, 2017 – 6:00 AM (IT would start shutdown of affected systems at 6:00 AM, power would go down at 8:00 AM). 
- End Date/Time: July 29, 2017 – 6:00 PM.
- Area impacted: Emergency power systems including all UPS, IT Data Center, Fire Alarm, Television (College Cable).

IT has been upgrading the server capacity in the Coates building, so most systems/servers will remain online during the power outage scheduled for the Perkins Building. These servers normally run in the Perkins building, but will be migrated to our Coates server farm ahead of the outage.

Systems that will be available without interruptions, unless otherwise noted:
- Email
- EKU Web Content
- Blackboard (small interruption of service when we cutover to Coates Datacenter)
- Lync/Phones
- Touchpoint
- Network Drive (S:)
- Print Servers used by labs
- Pexip – (reduced capacity, but online)
- Various other servers including:
o SmartVue
o TRC servers hosted by IT
o Fax Services
o WorldDox
o TracDat
o TimeClockPlus
o DirectAccess
o Arlington Server
o AVM – Avigilon
o Aceware
o Micros Servers – used by Aramark
o TeacherEd server
o Housing servers

These systems will not be available:
• Banner (EKU Direct along with normal Banner)
• Network Drives (L:, N:, Q: , U:, P: and W:) – all campus users will need to save and close any open documents before they leave work on Friday (July 21st). We will send a couple of reminder emails about this.
• Wireless – some of the critical servers used to provide wireless are located in Perkins. Wired connections will be available in the residential halls and campus buildings.
• Television services for campus – these all terminate in the Perkins Building

Information Technology will begin upgrading all Lync servers to Skype for Business.  Skype for Business is the new name for Lync and phone service will not change for campus. This upgrade will take place intermittently over approximately the next 7-10 days beginning Thursday, July 20th at 6:00 p.m. All work will occur after hours and could result in periodic phone outages. IT expects phone service disruption to be minimal. Please be aware that any phone outages over the next 7-10 days will most likely be due to the ongoing upgrade. IT will correspond any non-upgrade phone service issues that may occur during this time in a separate email.

On Friday June 30th, 2017 from 12:30-6:00 PM, the IT Systems group will be applying operating system updates to all servers. This will cause short interruptions to some services as things are restarted. While our servers are patched against the latest round of ransomware, we want to enter this holiday weekend with current patch levels.

Blackboard will be unavailable during updates.  This minor update fixes the problems currently affecting instructors' grading of discussion forums and blogs and managing groups.  There are no changes to the user interface or program features.  We expect the system to be unavailable for up to 40 hours, as it was for the similar process in early January.  If you are teaching an eight-week class in "Term A," note that your final grades are due on Wednesday, March 22.

Blackboard was unavailable 12:01 a.m. Saturday until 4:30 p.m. Sunday, January 8, for an update.  There are no changes to the user interface or program features, but several changes to the "backend" should make things much smoother and less prone to glitches.

Update: Blackboard was unavailable from midnight Friday until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.  The update started normally but then slowed unexpectedly.  With assistance from Blackboard we let things finish successfully.

Wednesday - February 10, 2016

At 6:00 PM this evening our electrical contractors will be doing some work to the PBX room in Coates. While this work is occurring the room will be running on UPS power, so we don’t expect any service interruptions. 

What’s happening:

1.       Power to the old Coates UPS will be shutdown.
2.       Masters is adding a new breaker to provide power to our new Coates UPS.
3.       Power is back online.
4.       After that is complete Networking is relocating the rack that provides connectivity to the President’s office. This will cause an interruption in service.
