Mac Malware Flashback

Mac Malware Flashback

A new version of the Mac malware Flashback has recently been discovered. It has infected over a half million computers worldwide. The malware accessed a vulnerability in Java to install without the user’s knowledge. Recent updates to the Mac OS have closed this vulnerability, but it is possible that Apple computers on campus may have been affected.

Follow these steps to check for and remove the Flashback malware:

  1. Download the patch
  2. Unpack the zip file (the file you downloaded)
  3. Run the flashback-detect.command file
  4. Enter computer password (the window will not show letters typed, hit enter when done typing in password)
  5. If you get the message below, "Does not appear to be infected" your computer is fine. If you get any other message, contact the Help Desk.

Infections like Flashback stress the importance of keeping your operating system and anti-virus software up to date.  Take this opportunity to check for any updates by clicking on the Apple icon in the top left corner and selecting Software Update.
